Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is defined as the loss of ovarian function before the age of 40. According to the literature, POI affects approximately 1% of women globally. The loss of ovarian function causes infertility and menopausal symptoms and raises the risk of many diseases, such as osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases. Diverse etiological factors are associated with POI, including genetic and chromosomal disorders and iatrogenic and autoimmune causes. The reasons for iatrogenic POI include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. In most cases, however, the etiology remains unknown. The aim of this research was to identify POI patients in Finland. This goal was accomplished using statistics on reimbursements for prescription medicines provided by the Social Insurance Institution of Finland. The incidence of POI was calculated using age and person-years. We also aimed to assess the risk of POI among POI patients’ first-degree relatives. Moreover, we sought to study the etiological factors of POI, specifically chromosomal disorders, congenital malformations, and prior cancer diagnoses. The etiological factors were assessed via the comparison of POI cases with population references.
